An effective earthquake alarm system has been frantically developed since the tragic events of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami as well as last year’s disaster of Japan. The relation of an earthquake to a tsunami is the same as smoke to fire; if you have a deep sea earthquake then chances are you’ll be visited by an unwelcome tsunami. Today the equipment for the alarm system is ready and available to work, but what would the best way to communicate its finding in real time to millions of people; this is where Twitter and Facebook come in. The wireless alarm system that connects all the earthquake alarm systems monitored by the US Geological Survey is connected to their own Twitter account (@USGSted) and the ‘ted’ aspect relates to Twitter Earthquake Dispatch.

Underwater Hotels are a technological marvel that Jules Verne would be proud of. Architecture of this decade aims to push the limits, and the next logical step is to open a holiday palace underwater. Instead of looking for a luxury property for rent in London for some time away, what if you could book into one of 220 Suites available at the Hydropolis in Dubai, when it plans to open in the next few years. Whether the thought makes you hum songs from the soundtrack of the Little Mermaid or imagine a trip in the Nautilus, we have to marvel at the architecture technology to be able for such a structure to withstand the pressures of the sea, and incorporate the luxury of a million dollar hotel beneath the waters.

Australian military aims to lead the way in hazardous environment clothing testing with their new use of a simulated environment testing facility to put soldiers’ apparel through its paces. The facility has the ability to simulate a wide range of environments that Australian personnel may encounter while in the line of duty including a temperature range from negative 20 to positive 50 degrees Celsius. Donning everything from combat trousers through to helmets, virtual military troops, in the forms of mannequins, will be fully dressed and the clothing will be assessed to check whether it meets the set criteria and to discover what improvements can be made in the testing chambers.
